school or college leavers

Getting some practical work experience before you leave school or college can be a really good idea. Not only will it help you develop skills and experience, which you can add to your CV, but it will also give you more of an idea about the kind of work you might like to do in future.

Lots of local councils offer work experience for school and college students in many different departments. Why not look through our career descriptions to see what kind of work you might like to do, then contact your nearest local councils and find out whether they would be able to offer you a work experience placement or work shadowing opportunities. Check the meet the employers section to find your nearest local council website.

After you have finished school or college, you may be able to apply for an Apprenticeship or similar trainee scheme with your local council. Apprenticeships offer you the chance to earn and learn at the same time and give you the opportunity to study for a nationally recognised qualification.

Read our qualifications and training section to find out more about how Apprenticeships work.
