Shine Week 6-10 July
Thousands of children and young people from across England are taking part in Shine Week (6-10 July) showcasing hundreds of different talents from street dance to bee keeping, and skills in science and technology to working in the community.
Here’s some of the events that have been taking place:
Monday
• Shine launches ‘Bring it Back’, a dance track featuring young street-dance groups. Featuring N-dubz & Tinchy Stryder and already being played on Ras Kwame & Mista Jam Radio One shows, this track is set to be the sound of Summer 09
• The video will be the first ever user generated music video, where people from across the UK can star in the official dance video by sending in films of them doing the dance to www.shineweek.co.uk
• The music video is being completed at Southbank on the Monday of Shine Week, where hundreds of young people from across the country are taking to the roof to perform street dance at its best, bringing back classic old skool moves such as the Robot and Running Man.
Tuesday
• As part of Shine Week, Wimbledon and HSBC have been running an art competition with secondary schools to ask for their interpretation of their favourite ‘Legends of Wimbledon’
• The winner will be announced during Shine Week and the lucky school will receive a special VIP visit from Tim Henman and England coach, Dan Bloxham, who both carry out a bespoke tennis training session with the children
• The winning school will also receive a signed piece of artwork from Rolf Harris who will penned his own interpretations of Wimbledon Legends during the recent Wimbledon Championships
Wednesday
• Shine Week showcases young product designers on Wednesday through its ‘Talent 2 Trade’ competition – www.t2trade.co.uk
• ‘Talent 2 Trade’ encourages young people to realise their creative ideas and inspirations and take them in to production
• Young people have been invited to design an ethical bag that will be sold in Tesco stores
• Nine regional winners will be announced during Shine Week, chosen by a judging panel including designer, Cath Kidston, and will see their product being manufactured and sold in their local store
Thursday
• Shine Week and Electronic Arts is offering a school class a chance to win an exclusive master class from the Boom Blox studio
• Lucky winners will learn about the talents needed to make it in the creative industries and they will each get a chance to create their own level which will be uploaded on to the EA Hall of Fame
• Winners could be in with a chance to win a visit with all the family to the Boom Blox studio in LA
Friday
• The House of Lords is opening its chamber for the only time this year to host a debate between 150 young and diverse teenagers from across the country as part of Shine Week, in collaboration with The Bridge, an organisation which encourages disengaged young people to come together and debate important topical and political issues
• The topics of the day include ‘celebrity vs. talent’ and positive perceptions of youth
• Young people aged between 13 and 18 years old will be thrashing out these issues chaired by the Lord Speaker, Baroness Hayman and supported by Al Ainsley-Green, Children’s Commissioner
• The event aims to showing disengaged young people the importance of voicing their opinions
