HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT TRAINEESHIP SCHEME (2010)
TWO YEAR WORK PLACEMENT
The English Heritage Historic Environment Traineeship (HET) Scheme is a highly sought after initiative which offers up to ten two-year professional work placements within the planning and development teams. Trainee Historic Environment Managers will be based in regional offices across the country and will gain work experience and training in the application of professional conservation management skills in a planning and development context.
The HET Scheme is for people who have the skills to manage change in the historic environment and want the professional development to commence or enhance their career in the sector. At the end of your training you should be ready to meet the challenges presented within a local authority or one of the many other agencies and organisations managing the historic environment.
Ideally, you will have practical work experience in a heritage discipline (such as archaeology, buildings’ history, conservation, landscape architecture or planning) underpinned with a degree in a subject such as archaeology, architecture, conservation, environmental sciences, history, landscape architecture, planning, or urban design. You will be able to demonstrate strong analytical, communication and negotiation skills as well as an ability to build effective relationships.
Non-graduates with substantial practical work experience in a heritage discipline are encouraged to apply.
As a Trainee you will receive high-quality work experience training in historic environment management, enabling you to enhance both the depth of your specialist knowledge and the breadth of your inter-disciplinary skills. Work units will include a secondment or work shadowing to relevant organisations. In the second year you will undertake a project, on a subject of value to you and the sector as a whole.
Many previous trainees have worked closely with local councils, particularly with planning and development control services.
Appointments will be made on a two-year fixed term basis. Salary from £18,000 p.a. – £23,000 p.a. depending on experience, skills and location.
English Heritage values diversity and aims to employ people who reflect this.
Closing date: Friday 21 May 2010
