Occupational Therapist

Andy, Occupational Therapist
Northumberland County Council

I provide a specialist occupational therapy service to older people with disabilities, but I also have a generic care management role. The job involves using occupational therapy skills to enable people to remain living at home in the community; this can include provision of equipment, adaptations, advice and training for carers.

I’m involved in liaising with health, housing and social care colleagues as well as the independent sector, for example, registered social landlords, care agencies, building contractors and equipment suppliers. The role also involves providing palliative care, which can include co-ordinating comprehensive packages at home or contracting suitable residential placements.

I applied for the role because it incorporated care management and work within a team. To do the job I needed a degree in Occupational Therapy plus two years’ experience. However, I’ve also received quite a bit of training since I’ve been with the council, such as short courses in computer skills, care managemnet, vulnerable adults, and relevant legislation.

Despite the challenges of constant change and reorganisation within social care, it’s a great job and I particularly enjoy the client contact.
