Video transcript

My name is Alex Kiddell and I’m a programme manager. At the moment we’re doing several projects in Deptford and the programme’s called “future of Deptford town centre”, and within that, we’re renovating the station, we’re relocating a new school, building a new community centre, a new car park and some new houses for the local residents.

This is an artists impression of what the station will look like (Alex shows a picture), at the moment it’s a space that’s just derelict. The arches are not being used for anything at all; in fact they were being used for anti-social behaviour before, and what we’d like to try and do is clean up the main square and start utilising the arches for cafés and public spaces really.

I think my career’s quite interesting because, just the sheer mix of people you have to liaise with everyday. I am quite a people person, and always like talking to different people and finding out different things and you find out an amazing amount of things, about architecture, or about construction, or about engineering, all the different engineering aspects e.g. the building of the station, there’s civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering. There are so many different things you learn about just in this one profession, you learn about a whole other range of professions.

If I could do absolutely anything at all in the world, I’d like to go abroad. I like my job in programme management, as it just gives you lots different opportunities and because you can take that around the world. I like to carry on in the sector that I’m in, just maybe somewhere else, in a different part of the world.
