Video transcript

I think initially when I left school; I didn’t know where I was going, who I wanted to be, for me that just came with age. I’m sure a lot of people know what they want to do when they’re 18, but I certainly didn’t, in fact I probably don’t really know what I want to do now.

I’m Suzanne Primmer and I’m an Emergency Planning Officer, for Humber Emergency Planning Service.

One of my friends used to explain my job and every time somebody asked, she would say, “every time something happens, she decides which one of the thunder birds to call out”.

I was working in the hotel industry and just wanted a change, saw the job for emergency planning assistant advertised and went for it.

When I finished my A-levels, I just didn’t want to stay on in education, I was sick of it by that time. So I got offered the opportunity to go to Spain with one of my friends. Initially it was meant to be for six months and I ended up staying for three years.

We wanted to work in a hotel, for they were crying out for English speakers. Moved into the hotel and worked there and just absolutely loved it.

I’ve actually gone back to university now and I’m doing a degree in social and behavioural studies. I’ve got my experience from emergency planning, but I’ve also got, or will have a degree in a completely different subject, so I can literally take it anywhere.

I don’t think you know what’s going to come next. At the moment I love my job but if you ask me, if I was going to be in emergency planning for the rest of my career, then I’d say probably not, but couldn’t say what I was going to do next.
