(Sue brings a children’s puppet into the room with her, as she enters.)

My name is Sue Wink and I’m a Young People and Children’s Services Development Officer, that’s a posh title for a person in charge of children’s libraries.

I think young people will absolutely adore working in a library, it isn’t the traditional “Ssh, be quiet.” It offers absolutely anybody range of different careers. As long as they think “Oo I’m all right working with people.” Think of librarianship, because that’s the key to everything.

I always wanted to be a teacher, I remember going home one day from school and saying to my mum, “I don’t want to be a teacher anymore.” So she said, “What on earth are you going to do?” So I said, “I heard there’s a job in the library.”

When I went for my interview I evidently said the right thing because they said, “Why do you want to be a librarian?” and I said, “Because I like people.”

I set up a house bound library service and we went to prison libraries and mental hospitals. It was interesting to say the very, very least. One of the mental hospitals I went into, I was actually stabbed, but you’re probably going edit that out!

I’ve no regrets about the career path that I took; I think it was absolutely the right one for me. To end my career, which I will be doing in this post, is the very best thing. I do know when I leave in a few months time; I’m not going to be very happy, I shall be very sad and you’ll get me crying again so don’t! Stop it!
