Charlotte
ngdp National Management Trainee
08:30 Arrive at work
---
Charlotte arrives at work and has coffee, while she starts going through emails and checks her calendar for any meetings during the day. As a project manager, phone calls and emails are an essential part of the day to ensure that different elements of a project get off the ground.
11:00 Meeting with line manager
Around mid-morning Charlotte catches up with her line manager to discuss any problems and offer a progress update on current projects. Being on the national graduate development programme (ngdp), she gets to experience a wide range of local government services and has had some amazing experiences, ranging from directing a film crew, to collecting dumped rubbish bags, to shadowing the chief executive.
13:00 Lunch
For Charlotte, lunch is either a sandwich at her desk, or, if meetings and work allow, coffee and cake with friends in the town centre. The social side of work is always busy. Working across different departments and teams means that there is often a birthday to celebrate or a leaving do.
14:00 Meetings
During the afternoon, Charlotte might run an employee focus group, or deliver a report at a management team meeting – it depends on the project. The range of work she’s involved in is not only diverse, but challenging and she gets a great deal of satisfaction from knowing the work she does makes a real impact on people in the local community.
17:30 Home time
With the last email of the day sent, Charlotte tidies her desk ready for the next day and heads for home.
