Apprenticeships

About Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are a great opportunity to earn and learn at the same time. Doing an Apprenticeship enables you to train on-the-job and gain practical skills, while also studying for nationally recognised qualifications. Apprentices do real jobs for real employers, so you’re paid to work while you learn. There is no set rate of pay for apprentices, but all employed apprentices must receive a wage of no less than £95 per week – many apprentices earn more.

There are three levels of Apprenticeship available for those aged 16 and over:

  • Apprenticeships – equivalent to five good GCSE passes, apprentices usually work towards NVQ Level 2, Key Skills and, in some cases, a relevant knowledge-based qualification such as a BTEC.
  • Advanced Apprenticeships – equivalent to two A-levels, advanced apprentices usually work towards NVQ Level 3, Key Skills and, in most cases, a relevant knowledge-based certificate such as a BTEC.
  • Higher Apprenticeships – usually includes working towards NVQ Level 4 and, in some cases, a knowledge-based qualification such as a Foundation degree.

Apprenticeships in local government
More than 130,000 employers nationally offer Apprenticeships, many of which are local councils. Local government offers a variety of different Apprenticeships in occupations such as social care, customer service, business administration, ICT, childcare, catering and trades like joinery or plastering. The LGcareers Apprenticeship pages provide you with information about which Apprenticeships you could do in local government and how they relate to the many different job roles. You can also watch videos and read profiles from apprentices working in local councils. Use the links below to find out more.
